15489 - PAINT, PLASTIC EMULSION —SPECIFICATION, standard prescribes the
requirements and methods of sampling and test for plastic emulsion paint used
for interior and exterior protection and decoration of building surfaces after
surface preparation and priming.
They
classify, Plastic emulsion paint shall be of two types:
Gloss is possessed by most materials encountered in everyday
life, and its occurrence is so common that persons seldom stop to give it notice.
People are, nevertheless, responsive to the general appearance of objects and
nearly everyone can form opinions as to the beauty, attractiveness, or striking
appearance of things they see. Gloss is one of the major factors in appearance,
and several methods for determining it have been developed.
The glossiness of a surface is the appearance which results
from its power to reflect light specularly. For any given surface, glossiness
may vary with conditions of illumination and directions of view, but gloss is
considered to be an inherent quality.
Glossyness of the surface means, the surface’s shininess / sheen
/ lustre / light reflecting ability / surface containing un-oxidized metal,
etc. More briefly and accurately, refer the below image
Find the difference:
Specular gloss shall be determined in
accordance with EN ISO 2813, BS EN 01062-1.
If the reflectance measured at 60° is less than 10, the measurement shall be repeated at 85°, the value obtained at 85° determines the class.
In practice, the gloss level achieved will depend on the state and nature of the substrate. Gloss cannot be measured on textured coatings and coatings with coarse or very coarse granularity.
More the reading value, higher the gloss.
As per, MPI (Master Painter Institute) Architectural Painting Manual
Guide Specification
Revision – September 2012, glossy is classified as:
This can be tested as per ASTM D 523: This test method covers the measurement of the specular
gloss of nonmetallic specimens for glossmeter geometries of
60, 20, and 85° Let see how to test the gloss - using Gloss Meter
