Difference Between Metallic Minerals and
Non-Metallic Minerals:
Properties
Metallic Elements
Non-metallic Elements
Definition
Metallic minerals contain metal elements in their
chemical formula
Non-Metallic Minerals do not contain metal elements
in their inorganic chemical formula.
Example
Chalcopyrite, Iron, Copper, Gold, etc.
Clay, Diamond, Dolomite, Gypsum, Mica, Amethyst and
Quartz, etc.
Extraction of Material
Metals can be extracted by melting the metallic
minerals.
Non-metallic minerals do not yield new products upon
melting.
Derivation
They are associated with igneous rocks.
Are associated with sedimentary rocks.
Nature
Metals are generally hard solid and vapourize only
at high temperature.
Non-metals are generally soft and usually gases or
liquids.
Lustre
Metals have a lusture called metallic lusture and
can be polished.
Non-metals
lack luster.
Melting & boiling point
Their melting and boiling points are high (except
alkali metals and Hg).
Non-metals usually have low melting and boiling
points.
Density
Metals have high density except alkali metals like
Na, K etc.
Non-metals generally have low density.
Malleability & ductility
Metals are generally malleable and ductile and have
very high tensile strength.
Non-metals
are non-malleable and non-ductile.
Formation of alloy
Metals form alloys and amalgams.
Bronze is an alloy of Copper, Tin & Zinc. Sodium
amalgam is an alloy of Mercury & Sodium.
Non-metals do not form alloys.
Brittle
Metals are hard, but not brittle.
Non-metals are brittle in nature.
Conduction of heat & electricity
Metals are generally good conductors of heat and
electricity.
Non-metals are bad conductors of heat and
electricity.
Solubility in water / liquid
Metals do not generally dissolve in liquids except
by chemical reaction.
They are generally soluble in water or other
solvents and do not react with them chemically i.e. no chemical
reaction takes place.
Sound when hit
They make a ringing sound (they are sonorous)
They make a dull sound
