Initial setting time is that time period between the time
water is added to cement and time at which 1 mm square section needle fails to
penetrate the cement paste, placed in the Vicat’s mould 5 mm from the bottom of
the mould.
Final setting time is that time period between the time
water is added to cement and the time at which 1 mm needle attached with
circular plate does not make any impression.
The standards for this are: DIN 1164, EN 196, BS 4550,
ASTM C187-191, EN 480-2, DIN 1168, Test method B EN 12379-2, ASTM C472-99.

The initial setting time for different types of cements is as follows:
- For OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) 33 Grade as per IS 269:1989 30 minutes
- For OPC 43 Grade as per IS 8112:1989 30 minutes
- For OPC 53 Grade as per IS 12269:1987 30 minutes
- For PPC (Portland-Pozzolana Cement) as per IS 1489:1991 30 minutes
- For RHC (Rapid Hardening Cement) as per IS 8041:1990 30 minutes
- For LHC (Low Heat Cement) as per IS 12600:1989 60 minutes
- For PSC (Portland Slag Cement) as per IS 455:1989 30 minutes
