Mortar Composition - The proportions of materials for the standard mortar shall be one part of cement to 2.75 parts of graded standard sand by weight. Use a water cement ratio of 0.485 for all portland cements and 0.460 for all air entraining portland cements. The water cement ratio for other than portland and air entraining portland cements shall be such as to produce a flow of 110 +/- 5. Batch the following, which is sufficient for 6 samples: Cement, g 500 Sand, g 1375 Water, g
This test method covers the determination of the compressive strength of hydraulic cement mortars using 2 inch (50 mm) cube specimens.
For the evaluation of compressive strength, three 2-inch (51-mm) cube specimens (like those described in ASTM C109, see figure 9) were prepared according to ASTM C1107.(36,1) The cubes were tested at several ages: 4 and 8 h and 1, 3, 7, and 28 d. The cube specimens were kept in their molds for 24 h, at which time they were demolded and sealed within plastic bags until the age of testing, unless the testing age was within the first 24 h, in which case, the specimens were tested immediately after being demolded.

Cube size for compressive strength:
ASTM C 109 – 50 Square cube – for cement-like materials
> BS 4551 / IS 4031 – 70.1 Square cube – for SLC, non-shrink structural grouts, PU / epoxy coatings & SLC flooring materials.
> ASTM C39 - 76-mm (3-inch) diameter cylinder - for SLC, non-shrink structural grouts, PU / epoxy coatings & SLC flooring materials.
> BS 1881: 108 – 150mm and 100mm Square cube for concrete.
> ASTM C470-81 and ASTM C496:71 - 150 x 300mm cylinder for concrete.
> As per BS EN 12190 - the size of cubes for compressive
strength of repair mortar shall be 160mm (L) X 40mm (W) X 40mm (D) prismatic
moulds shall be prepared.
